A Journey through the Social, Cultural and Historical Heritage of the Canary Islands
At CEIP Mariela Cáceres, we are proud to share how our students from 1st to 6th grade have been immersed in the fascinating world of typical Canarian basketry. This educational project, framed within the axis of Social, Cultural and Historical Canarian Heritage, has allowed our students to discover and value one of the most emblematic craft traditions of our islands.
For several weeks, the children have had the opportunity to learn about the ancestral techniques of basketry, an art that has been passed down from generation to generation and that reflects the cultural richness of the Canary Islands. Through practical workshops, the pupils have explored the different materials used, and have learnt about the different techniques and styles that characterise Canarian basketry.
The success of this project would not have been possible without the collaboration and dedication of Beatriz, a master craftswoman who has shared with us her vast knowledge and skill, guiding our students in making their own creations. Her teachings have been fundamental for the students not only to learn a new skill, but also to develop a deep respect and appreciation for the cultural heritage of our region.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Beatriz for her commitment and passion, as well as for the beautiful creations she has shown us and which we enclose in this blog. Her workshops have been an enriching and memorable experience for all of us.
We would also like to thank the Cabildo Insular de La Palma for their valuable involvement and support in this project. Their collaboration has been crucial for the success of this educational initiative, allowing our students to connect with their cultural roots and feel part of a history and tradition that is a source of pride for all Canarian people.
At CEIP Mariela Cáceres, we firmly believe in the importance of preserving and transmitting our cultural heritage to new generations. Projects like this not only enrich the knowledge of our students, but also foster a sense of identity and belonging that will last throughout their lives.
